Verizon Demonstrates Skype Mobile on YouTube

Verizon have begun to push their Skype Mobile services on YouTube, and while the video doesn’t reveal anything new about the product, it’s good to see that things are moving forward. Verizon claims the call quality will be excellent, and messaging will be an integral part of the service. Hopefully Verizon haven’t locked Skype down from doing business with other carriers, as I know many other BlackBerry users in Canada and on other providers would love to get their hands on this service.

Time Warner Cable to Help Decongest AT&T and Verizon Networks

Time Warner Cable is pitching to carriers such as AT&T and Verizon, a service that uses its underground cables to carry mobile calls and data traffic. The aim is to alleviate the network strain that smartphones (particularly the iPhone) are placing on the network. Remember, for every 1 iPhone, you can run 4 BlackBerrys on a typical network so it’s clear who is to blame.

The service is known as wireless backhaul, and has become Time Warner Cable’s fastest-growing business. Rather than have calls and data broadcasted over radio waves and routed using cell towers, the backhaul system pulls the signal from the antenna into the carrier’s wired network. Lines can be added to the backhaul pipes in order to mitigate the loads.

Backhaul isn’t necessarily a solution, but more of a temporary fix. There are still issues as the signal is sent over radio tower to tower, and carriers are still urging the FCC to allocate more airwaves to address this issue. Another solution will be to upgrade the networks to LTE. This will allow the networks to handle a greater load, and future proof our smartphones against failure due to infrastructure.

Social Beat For BlackBerry Being Pushed To Verizon Subscribers

Social Beat

If you are a Verizon BlackBerry user there is a good chance that you’ve already had the installer icon for Social Beat for BlackBerry pushed to your device.

Social Beat is a social networking client that allows you to connect to multiple networks all from one the same client. Think Social Scope, but, not in a state of never ending beta and attainable by all Verizon BlackBerry users.

Social Beat connects to Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Gmail, and Google Talk and has the ability to display RSS feeds.  There are, of course, individual applications for each of these social networking sites, however, combining them into a single application saves a lot of space which we all now is precious on all but the newest BlackBerry devices.

If the installer icon for Social Beat has been pushed to your Verizon BlackBerry yet and you don’t want to wait to give the app a try, you can download Social Beat OTA via the following links for your specific Verizon BlackBerry device.

Social Beat for the 9650. (must be close to being released)
Social Beat for the Curve 8530.
Social Beat for the Tour 9630.
Social Beat for the Storm 9530.  (Not the smoothest application for the Storm)

More Details and Pictures Emerge of the BlackBerry Slider

The BlackBerry Slider has been making a huge splash in the blogs today and bbleaks have posted new pics and details, as well as CB has some unwatermarked images and theories. There are rumors that the device will hit the market as a Bold series device, which makes you wonder what’s going on with the device nomenclature. The Bold series carries a respected name and it’s possible RIM want to avoid the Storm’s negative past. Another reason to avoid the Storm branding is that Verizon may not be getting this device and the branding may conflict with legal agreements.

The new details that have emerged include:

  • The BlackBerry (Bold) Slider’s battery is an FX-1, orange colored battery, with rounded edges, thinner than the DX-1 and 1050mAh.
  • The device lacks SurePress and does not “click”. It’s a solid plate of glass like the iPhone and has a 360×480 resolution. On a side note, the screen looks to be about Storm size making the pixel density nothing to write home about.
  • The device is showing up as 9700a running OS 5.2 (aka 6.0) on various App World and web analytics.

So it looks like even if we see the device in video form, which we should soon, the device might not even be on. The most exciting part of seeing this device in action is going to be checking out how OS 6 performs and what new features RIM will include.
