Free BB App: face2face Combines LinkedIn, Facebook, And MySpace Into A Single BlackBerry App

face2face

I just installed face2face, a cross platform, location aware, social networking client from Promimate Global that combines Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter networks into a single client as well as ads consolidated chat between face2face users, on my BlackBerry, and, although I’ve only played around with it for about 5 minutes, it seems to be a pretty slick app thus far.

face2face is a location-aware smartphone app that solves the problems of privacy and safety that have become synonymous with social networking – so that more people can benefit from the advantages that come from knowing which friends are nearby.

I probably won’t enable any of the location aware aspects of face2face, and I will probably keep using a dedicated Twitter client on my device, however, face2face could be a candidate to replace Facebook for BlackBerry and LinkedIn for BlackBerry.  I can’t say for sure just yet, however, I am impressed with speed and the interface of the app and if it allows me to effectively git rid of Facebook which is slow, and replace LinkedIn which is large, face2face, my find a permanent home on my BlackBerry Storm 9530 which is memory starved.

face2face is a free BlackBerry application as well as free for the iPhone and Android devices.  You can download face2face for BlackBerry by visiting http://face2face.ws/downloads/bb/.  Find more information about face2face out here, and, if you check it out for yourself, come back and tell us what you think…

BlackBerry Enterprise Server Service Pack 2 Now Available for Download

BES admins can now download the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Service Pack 2 and take advantage of some cool new features such as additional metrics, reports and notifications to help monitor the system health as well as user self-service tools and pre-population of messages of up to 3000. Recently, we saw the leaked feature set, which was a pretty clear indication that SP2 was on the way.

BES 5.02 features single sign-on (SSO), initial support for separating business vs. personal content on the BlackBerry, new security self-service options for BlackBerry smartphone users, all new support for Microsoft Hyper-V for server virtualization, and much more.

Remember when we said RIM soft announced features to deal with corporate liable vs employee liable devices? Well it looks like this update is what they were talking about. Remote removal of corporate data from employee-owned devices is a new function built into BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.2 that is expected to be supported with an upcoming versions of the BlackBerry OS, allowing IT administrators to remove only corporate data from an employee-owned BlackBerry without affecting the employee’s personal information and applications. Additional features for keeping corporate content separate from personal content on employee-owned devices are expected later this year.

A new Individual-Liable Devices Policy permits employees who have purchased their own BlackBerry smartphones and have been connected to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server to access their personal email and calendar and make calls on their personal voice plan when the device is locked. It also prevents users from accessing organizer data from within social networking applications on their BlackBerrys.

These employee liable and corporate liable features are also expected to become available to businesses that use BES Express to connect employee-owned devices later this year.

Here are more highlights on the upcoming features:

Single sign-on allows end users and administrators to directly and securely access BlackBerry Web Desktop Manager and BlackBerry Administration Service once they’ve signed in to the network without the need to re-enter their user ID and password. Smartphone users can be allowed access to the intranet, files and business systems “behind the firewall” directly from their BlackBerry without the need to enter their network password with the device already authenticated via Active Directory and BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

New security self-service options for end users – End users with BlackBerrys connected to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server now have access to new self-service features in BlackBerry Web Desktop Manager, including the ability to reset their device password and lock the device, or remotely delete all device data and disable it in the event that it is lost or stolen. Previously, these functions could only be performed by contacting their IT administrator. (IT administrators can allow or disallow these self-service features.)

Flexible URL-based smartphone authentication – IT administrators can now assign different authentication requirements for specific URLs. For example, 2-factor authentication can be enabled for specific internal business systems containing customer information while no authentication may be required to access the Web.

Support for additional web browsers has been added to enable access to the BlackBerry Administration Service for IT Staff and BlackBerry Web Desktop Manager for employees via the latest versions of popular web browsers, including Google Chrome 4.0, Internet Explorer 8, Mozilla Firefox 3.6 and Safari 4.

Standardized BlackBerry Administration Groups for IT staff – BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.2 ships with a set of predefined administration groups for IT administrators to quickly assign permissions and access to BlackBerry Administration Service for different IT staff responsibilities, including junior IT staff, help desk and senior administrators. These predefined administration groups reflect best practices and can help IT departments standardize permissions across their staff.

IT policy reconciliation – This new feature gives administrators the flexibility to leverage group administration to deliver IT policies to end users. IT policies can be assigned to groups and a blended IT policy can be delivered to the end users device based on the groups they belong to.

Support for Windows Server 2008 R2, upcoming support for SQL Server 2008 R2 and all new support for MS Hyper-V 2008 have been added to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server platform certification list. These continue to keep BlackBerry Enterprise Server compatible with leading business, network and communications systems in the market today. SQL Server 2008 R2 is expected to be supported within 30 days of release.

Brazilian Portuguese has been added to the languages supported, making BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5 now available in 7 languages, including English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese and Brazilian Portuguese.

Twitter for BlackBerry Coming Out of Beta with Additional Language Support

The official Twitter for BlackBerry app is coming out of Beta over the course of tonight and tomorrow. The app started in beta in April and it was a huge success. At the official Twitter conference, Chirp, we heard some interesting statistics that pertain to the official Twitter app:

  • 300K new Twitter users per day, 8% of daily signups are coming via the new Twitter for BlackBerry app.
  • 1.7% of tweets came from Twitter for BlackBerry during the beta. That’s about 850,000 tweets per day.

With the full launch of the application, we won’t see any major updates, but rather a lot of language support. The following languages will be supported:

• Portuguese EU
• Japanese
• Indonesian
• Russian
• Turkish
• Dutch
• Korean

This version will also feature the ability to access any user’s profile from anywhere in the application using auto-complete functionality for followers.

Here are the feature lists from the original beta launch and the update that happened in May:

Features at launch:

• Push Notifications for Direct Messages
• Timeline Support
• Following and Followers
• Posting, Sending, Deleting , Replying and Retweeting Tweets
• User/Saved/Keyword/Proximity Search
• Tweet Photos/Links
• Trending Topics
• Seamless integration into core BlackBerry applications
• URL Shortening
• Auto-Update

New features during the beta:

• Quote Tweets (editing retweets)
• Auto Complete for @ usernames
• View Photos from Yfrog & Tweetphoto
• View Geotagged Tweets
• Personal Info Guard
• Hotkeys for Navigation
• Report as Spam

Keep an eye out for the full launch of Twitter for BlackBerry tonight and tomorrow in App World in the social networking category. Hopefully the full version will bring as much positive news as the beta, and with additional language support, Twitter themselves might see a boost in user accounts internationally.
