Foursquare coming to BlackBerry early December

4sqbb2

The Next Web got the scoop on a Foursquare app for BlackBerry that is trickling out of beta soon. The app is supposed to go live “early December,” and with about 50 beta testers already using it, the app should be coming out any day now.

Foursquare has around 100,000 users in their community that share information about their city and use the service to find like-minded individuals and possibly friends. The Foursquare API is available to developers, so we may see more applications building its functionality into their apps.

Any big Foursquare users out there?

RIM talks about security threat of DDOS attacks on carriers

Scott Totzke, RIM’s vice-president of BlackBerry security, recently spoke with the press about the potential of the DDOS attack by hackers using BlackBerry devices to target wireless networks. The thought is that because the BlackBerry is essentially a smaller PC, it could be used in a similar manner to overload networks.

But is this really a big concern? I have to agree with Ronen at BerryReview, that someone stealing personal data with an application seems like a bigger concern. All you have to do is build an application that accesses user data, and sends it back to the company’s servers. If they wanted to, a company could use the data on your BlackBerry for malicious purposes.

It seems like only a matter of time until someone in Nigeria figures out how to submit a malicious app into Mobihand. While App World might have a vetting process that looks at what the app is accessing, I can guarantee you the Mobihand network isn’t diligent enough to catch something like this.

Remember, Mobihand are the same people who sell NetworkACC, a bogus application that claims to speed up your mobile network. Not only is the app bogus and a waste of money, but I bet you eMobiStudio are gaming the review system because their app is filled with 5 star reviews. Mobihand have such a weak review system that anyone can write a hundred positive reviews about their app.

We can only hope that if a malicious app shows itself, the good people at BlackBerry Cool, BerryReview, CrackBerry, etc. will find out and spread the word not to download it.

RIM Launching BlackBerry Social Network, MyBlackBerry, Tomorrow… Maybe

BlackBerry SocialNetwork: MyBlackBerry

It looks like Research in Motion is getting into the social networking game by launching their very own BlackBerry social network named MyBlackBerry.

MyBlackBerry, gives device owners a social profile where they can share opinions on their favorite apps, accessories as well as tips and tricks they use on their devices. More importantly, they can also vent about all of these things with fellow users, and RIM will be there to listen. The whole thing looks more like a bulletin board than what you might consider to be a traditional social network nowadays, but that’s probably a good idea to streamline it and make it all about information.

The site will be personalized based on what actual BlackBerry device you have, we’re told. So you won’t see loads of information about the BlackBerry Storm, if you don’t have that model.

BerryReviews’s Ronen Halevy has been secretly working with Research in Motion on MyBlackBerry and says that, “All in all, its a good start”, but, feels that MyBlackBerry still needs a lot of work if it does indeed launch tomorrow.

We will have to keep our eyes open for this one…

BlackBerry Gemini 8520 from T-Mobile in black and white

8520

Ronen from BerryReview picked up the news that the upcoming BlackBerry Gemini 8520 will be shipping from T-Mobile in both black and white.

Back when I bought the iPhone 3G (don’t give me that look), I made sure to get the white version. Not because I thought it necessarily looked better, but because they made white the limited edition. It would be great to see more limited edition BlackBerry colors and cases being released.

The 8520 is shaping up to be an interesting device. With a cool new optical trackpad, it don’t matter if you’re black or white.

Stay tuned for the full review of the 8520.
