Android Over Takes RIM in Unit Sales

Android

For the first time since 2007 RIM was not the #1 in US smartphone sales.  Don’t for a second think it was Apple, rather Android stands #1 in Q2 2010 sales.  Numbers from NPD group show Android accounted for 33% of U.S. smartphone compared to 28% and 22% for RIM and Apple respectively.  I am not overly shocked as Android devices released almost every other week in Q2 2010.  The Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Incredible, HTC Evo 4G, HTC Hero, and HTC Droid Eris ranked amount the hottest Android devices.  On the other hand the was not RIM’s quarter for new devices.  HTC must be laughing all the way to the bank.

It will be interesting to see where the unit sales end up for year end, but it is amazing to see the success of Android.  I personally want to see if Android remains ahead of iPhone in Q3 given the release of iPhone 4.

Now before you go jumping off a bridge you have to read the fine print of the NPD report as it reveals something interesting.  Here let me make it larger for you.

Data Note: The information in this press release is from Mobile Phone Track – NPD’s consumer tracking of U.S. consumers, aged 18 and older, who reported purchasing a mobile phone. NPD does not track corporate/enterprise mobile phone purchases.

Yeah, so one of the larger markets that RIM focuses on is not accounted for here.  It is like tracking PC sales and saying, lets not count business sales.  This does highlight consumer demand and RIM is trying to address this trend.

Considering the numbers have always been reported this way it is still a huge event, but keep in mind we are ignoring a large portion of sales.  So you be the judge of what the numbers mean.

RIM Reports Q1 Fiscal 2011: Up In Every Category… Just Not Up Enough

Research in Motion Logo

One might think that revenue growth of over 24% to $4.24 billion, a 41% earnings per share increase to $1.38, an increase in device shipments of over 43% to 11.2 billion, and 4.9 million net new subscribers taking the total subscriber base up 60% quarter over quarter to 46 million, would actually be considered a pretty darn good quarter.  A pretty darn good quarter for this would have been if it weren’t for the pesky analysts that thought a pretty darn good good quarter was going to be most awesome and outstanding quarter.

Research in Motion just missed the street’s expectations by a little, however, they missed by a little in most every category.  RIM says that this is mostly due to the later than expected releases of the BlackBerry Pearl 3G and BlackBerry Bold 9650.  That actually sounds plausible…  RIM’s stock (RIMM) is down close to 2% in after-hours.  I am anxious to see what the second half of 2010 holds for RIM.

Adobe Flash 10.1!!

Adobe Flash

Adobe has released a press release announcing the availability of Flash 10.1 to mobile platform partners. Although it’s speculated that Flash implementation won’t be available to BlackBerry users until the new Webkit browser is available in Blackberry 6, various companies will now be developing sites compatible with this much anticipated addition to the BlackBerry Browser.

There still remains concerns regarding the security risks involved with having Flash enabled mobile devices, but, like it or not, there coming. I personally think that RIM, with security being its number one priority, will somehow find a way to assuage these concerns while optimizing and revolutionizing the mobile browsing experience.

eVoice Releases BlackBerry App For Its Virutal Phone Number Customers

eVoice yesterday announced that they have released a free  BlackBerry app that makes it easier for eVoice subscribers to manage their virtual phone number services while on the go.  For those of you not familiar with eVoice, think of it as a business class Google Voice like service with a monthly fee.

eVoice answers your calls with a professionally recorded greeting and routes them to any employee or location.  It also transcribes your voicemail to text allowing it to be sent to you via email or SMS.

eVoice BlackBerry App features include:

  • Click to Call/Caller ID — This feature allows eVoice subscribers to maintain a professional image when making business related calls from the BlackBerry by allowing the user to return calls directly from within the message, while displaying the user’s eVoice number as the outgoing Caller ID.
  • Message Search — Saves time by enabling users to quickly locate a specific voicemail by searching on message keywords.
  • Enhanced Dialing — Speed dial allows important business contacts to be reached with one touch directly from within the app, displaying the eVoice phone number as the outgoing Caller ID.

eVoice is a subscription based service starting at $12.95 per month, however, there is a 6 Month Free Trial which is about as good as it gets as far as free trials go.  If you decide to check it out, tell us how it goes…
