For OS Updates, Do I Need the BB Desktop Mgr?

Quick questions: Do I need the BlackBerry Desktop Manager installed in order to do an OS update? I know that I can use the Loader.exe program but does the BB Desktop Mgr need to be there (with whatever drivers, etc.) for the install to work? Thanks!!!

Official OS 5.0.0.586 for the Bold 9700 from T-Mobile

There have been a lot of leaked OS updates lately but it’s always best to grab the official OS updates as they’ve been through carrier quality assurance. T-Mobile have released OS 5.0.0.586 for the Bold 9700, which tends to get the lion’s share of the OS updates these days. If you haven’t updated your device, now seems like a good time to do so.

Only 20% Of BlackBerry Users Run OS 5

BlackBerry OS Pie Chart

Al Sacco from CIO.com posted an interesting pie chart displaying the distribution of BlackBerry Operating Systems in use and, not all that surprisingly, only 20% of current BlackBerry users run OS 5, the latest BlackBerry OS, on their device.  What is kind of surprising, however,  is that RIM still allows the carriers to exercise ultimate control as to if and when BlackBerry OS updates will be released on carrier branded BlackBerry devices.

OS 5 is significantly better than OS 4, however, it is primarily the carriers that have dragged their heels on officially releasing their branded versions of  BlackBerry OS updates that are readily found online as unsupported leaks.  The BlackBerryOS  is a bit more utilitarian than other mobile operating systems like Android, the iPhone OS, and even Palm’s webOS, thus end users may not be as concerned with updated their device simply because it performs that tasks that they bought it for, however, the carriers need to do a better job of getting OS updates in front of consumers in a more timely fashion than they currently do.

BlackBerry 6, the next version of the BlackBerry OS, is set to debut sometime this summer. With the BlackBerry Storm2 and the BlackBerry Bold 9700 being the only BlackBerry devices currently available that will be upgradable to  BlackBerry 6 it will be interesting to see if updates to BlackBerry 6 get to consumers faster than updates t0 legacy devices that have come before them.

6 reasons to get the BlackBerry Storm 2 9520 (with video)

YouTube user Salomondrin hasn’t been having any problems posting videos of the BlackBerry Storm 2, while other users are seeing their videos ripped down by RIM’s legal department. Why? Probably because it’s good press. He does a good job of selling users on the Storm 2, and in the end it’s good for business. I’d like to see Salomondrin post something highly critical of the Storm 2, and see if he can keep the video up.

Sal gives the following 6 reasons why you should get the BlackBerry Storm 2:

1. The Storm 2 is better looking.
2. WiFi
3. Memory – Storm 2 has 138 MB of application memory and 1.8 GB on device.
4. Texting – the texting experience is much faster due to the new sensors underneath the screen.
5. Faster – Even though Sal is using a device with an older OS, it’s still much faster to browse through the menu options and go from landscape to portrait mode.
6. Better Camera

While having more memory, a better camera and a faster processor is great, it is still very close to the Storm 1. There doesn’t seem to be anything revolutionary going on with the device, and I think with more OS updates to the Storm 1, you could have a very similar experience.

Carriers everywhere are dumping the Storm 1 to make inventory room for the Storm 2, but they’re going to have to do a lot to sell us on the Storm 2. Your BlackBerry Storm is a very decent device, I’m just not seeing the great leap forward. Lets see what marketing has to say about this.

We know that there are OS 5 leaks that have come out for both devices, however, they both definitely have some quirks that still need to be worked out.   We haven’t installed 4.7.0.167 on our BlackBerry Storm 9530, so, we cannot personally vouch for this leak, but we can say that we haven’t heard anything negative about it.

If you decide to try out one of these leaked Storm OS updates, come back and let us know how it works for you on your device.
