Twitter for BlackBerry Coming Out of Beta with Additional Language Support

The official Twitter for BlackBerry app is coming out of Beta over the course of tonight and tomorrow. The app started in beta in April and it was a huge success. At the official Twitter conference, Chirp, we heard some interesting statistics that pertain to the official Twitter app:

  • 300K new Twitter users per day, 8% of daily signups are coming via the new Twitter for BlackBerry app.
  • 1.7% of tweets came from Twitter for BlackBerry during the beta. That’s about 850,000 tweets per day.

With the full launch of the application, we won’t see any major updates, but rather a lot of language support. The following languages will be supported:

• Portuguese EU
• Japanese
• Indonesian
• Russian
• Turkish
• Dutch
• Korean

This version will also feature the ability to access any user’s profile from anywhere in the application using auto-complete functionality for followers.

Here are the feature lists from the original beta launch and the update that happened in May:

Features at launch:

• Push Notifications for Direct Messages
• Timeline Support
• Following and Followers
• Posting, Sending, Deleting , Replying and Retweeting Tweets
• User/Saved/Keyword/Proximity Search
• Tweet Photos/Links
• Trending Topics
• Seamless integration into core BlackBerry applications
• URL Shortening
• Auto-Update

New features during the beta:

• Quote Tweets (editing retweets)
• Auto Complete for @ usernames
• View Photos from Yfrog & Tweetphoto
• View Geotagged Tweets
• Personal Info Guard
• Hotkeys for Navigation
• Report as Spam

Keep an eye out for the full launch of Twitter for BlackBerry tonight and tomorrow in App World in the social networking category. Hopefully the full version will bring as much positive news as the beta, and with additional language support, Twitter themselves might see a boost in user accounts internationally.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server Service Pack 1 released

BES_service_pack_1

RIM have released Service Pack 1 for BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 for Microsoft Exchange and IBM Lotus Domino. While BES 5.0 was an exciting launch back at WES 2009, many of the enterprise users we spoke to said they would wait for SP1 before buying, because they wanted to make sure RIM had gone through the first wave of feedback and bugs.

New to BES 5.0 with Service Pack 1 includes:

  • BlackBerry device dashboard – Use the device dashboard to access the BlackBerry Monitoring Service which is now mobile friendly.
  • Enhancements to the BlackBerry Administration Service – You can better manage user accounts, navigate search results and you can view user account info when add and manage apps.
  • Enhancements to the BlackBerry Monitoring Service homepage – The homepage has been enhanced so you can view performance data and user statistics, graphs, messaging server mappings and overview info for BES components that are associated with all BES instances that the BMS monitors.
  • Enhancements to the calendar sync process – You can now run a calendar sync process on a BES instance to find and correct differences between the calendar entries on the device and the desktop.
  • More language support – BES is now available in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Japanese.
  • Support for importing WiFi profiles and VPN profiles from a .CSV file – You can add, delete, or update the WiFi profiles and VPN prfiles that you assign to user accounts by importing a .csv file.
  • Support for Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

The BlackBerry Curve 8530 is also the first Verizon BlackBerry with the optical trackpad.  No more trackball issues like its predecessor.
