E-Mails stops coming. Version 5.0.0.681 major problem

Hello Forum,

First post for me, hope it goes well.

I am tech support at a larger company in Sweden. We have recently (1 year ago) switched over from HTC to Blackberry Bold 9000. We have around 150 users atm all running on various versions and haven’t had one single problem since a few weeks ago when we started rolling out 5.0.0.681.

I have so far updated 48 handhelds to the new version and its the same thing with almost all handhelds, it works fine for a few days or maybe up to two weeks, then the redirection TO the handheld stops. You can still send emails from the handheld though.
To solve this I have to remove the user from the BES, wipe the handheld, readd user to BES and do a enterprise reactivation. But after some days, weeks, the problem re-occurs.

I have raised a call with the phone providor but their tech support is pure garbage so I want to give it a shot here.

And ofcourse I know I can downgrade, but not all users are in the office (vacation) so this is not an option atm.
Fun thing, the companys CEO just gave me a call while I was typing this thread, said that he haven’t had any new e-mails for 13 days. So yes this is a serious issue. 8-)

Note, we are using BB Manager vers. 4.1.6.20 on the server.

I’d be very happy if anyone could help me out here.

Thanks in advance

Nicklas

RIM is Screwed Says Dan Frommer, We Agree

Dan Frommer from Silicon Valley Insider published a story on Yahoo Finance today that sums up the feelings I have had about RIM. Dan’s article title is simple and to the point, “RIM is Screwed”.

The bottom line, RIM and the BlackBerry line is growing stagnant and it appears the co-CEO’s are oblivious to this gradual decline. A few highlights from the Silicon Alley Insiders article:

  • The touchscreen BlackBerry Storm is a joke. RIM’s QWERTY, plastic-keyboard BlackBerries are still leading the company.
  • RIM’s mobile software is garbage next to Apple’s, HTC’s Android implementations, and Palm’s webOS.
  • RIM’s Web browser is a toy compared to the advanced browsers that ship on better platforms.
  • And RIM’s BlackBerry App World — increasingly becoming part of the equation for Apple, Android, and others — is a ghost town. There are simply no must-have apps for the BlackBerry besides its “push” email system and the popular BlackBerry Messenger app. Those probably won’t be enough.

I have been a loyal BlackBerry user for a long time but I see RIM is not embracing the future and is slowly becoming the company that we will look back on and say “Remember when RIM made great smartphones?”

I invite you to read the article by Dan Frommer via this link. Maybe someone at RIM will read it and put a plan into action to save the BlackBerry brand, but they would have to admit something is wrong first and RIM won’t even keep users updated on data outages so don’t hold your breath.

Smartphone research comparing iPhone and BlackBerry often flawed

competesept2009-lg

The research behind iPhone and BlackBerry comparisons that is making its way into the mainstream media is almost always flawed. The media loves to talk about the prolific nature of the iPhone and how technologically advanced its users are, while almost implicitly ragging on BlackBerry.

A recent study claims that iPhone owners are much more likely to download apps and get involved with social networking than their BlackBerry-owning counterparts.

The study shows that about 72% of iPhone users are likely to have downloaded at least 10 third-party apps, but 73% of BlackBerry users have picked up five apps or less. The researchers add that iPhone owners are more willing to buy their apps than BlackBerry owners.

When it comes to downloading third party apps, this study failed to recognize that bulk apps, shouldn’t be recognized as multiple applications. They are essentially the same app, templated and replicated by changing a few small pieces of data. This is where RIM shines in that App World isn’t filled with the same amount of useless garbage.

With regards to social networking, the researchers found that roughly 71% of Apple users have a Facebook account versus 44% of BlackBerry users. Twitter follows a similar trend with 26% for iPhone versus 15% for BlackBerry.

Social networking discrepancies is a demographics issue, not a device issue as the research implies. While BlackBerry is moving its focus to the consumer market, it still has years of enterprise users behind it and this could be skewing the numbers. In the end, we all know that the BlackBerry is an incredibly powerful social networking tool. Whether or not the older BlackBerry demographic is using these services is another matter.

One element of the research that I find particularly flawed, is the research that says 83 percent of users prefer apps that cost below $5. This is a consistent mistake that researchers make. They think that just because you have asked someone what they want to pay for something, that that information is somehow valuable. The truth is that everyone wants to pay the minimum, and if possible, get it for free. The reality of the situation is that if your app is well designed and provides a tangible benefit to the user, the $5 benchmark is meaningless. Just look at TetherBerry, it’s a $50 application that is one of Mobihand’s best sellers.
