BerryReader For BlackBery: An Awesome, Awesome Google Reader Client For The BlackBerry

BerryReader for BlackBerry

I have to admit that it is not very often that I actually spend money buying BlackBerry applications.  It’s not that there aren’t a lot of really good BlackBerry applications out there, however, one of the perks of writing a BlackBerry blog is that developers often send you evaluations of their software so that you can review it.

That being said, I recently spent $10 on BerryReader, the most awesome Google Reader client for the BlackBerry that I’ve ever seen, and, it was worth every penny.

I have well over 500 feeds that I track daily in Google Reader.  I actually leave Google Reader open and running in a Google Chrome Window all by itself just because of the amount of time that I spend reading feeds each day.  BerryReader is the first Google Reader client for the BlackBerry that I’ve actually been able to use effectively while on the go and keep up with all of the feeds that I track daily.

WordPress for BlackBerry Updated to Version 1.3

It seems WordPress for BlackBerry has been updated to version 1.3, but the update is only visible in App World. If you go to the desktop version, it still shows version 1.2.1 and the official Automattic, Inc blog hasn’t posted about the update yet. It’s hard to say what’s new in this update because there isn’t any information available, but we know that the WordPress for BlackBerry Beta 1.3 included the following:

  • Improvements on the Stats feature for WordPress.com blogs and self-hosted that are using the WordPress.com stats plugin added.
  • Add the possibility to load more comments
  • Add the possibility to load comments by status (all/spam/pendings)
  • Add the possibility to set the default video-size for VideoPress users
  • Add the formatting toolbar and WordCount features to the post/page write screen
  • Add In app bug reporting and feedback
  • Improvement on the photo resizing opt, a better jpeg encoder is now used

Check out WordPress for BlackBerry in App World.

WordPress For BlackBerry Updated To Version 1.3

WordPress for BlackBerry 1.3

One of the cooler free BlackBerry Apps that I uses on a regular based on my BlackBerry Storm 9530 is WordPress for BlackBerry which has recently been updated to version 1.3 and is now available for download.  All BlackBerry users know that the current BlackBerry Browser is…  well, let’s just say that the BlackBerry Browser is challenged and using it to try to manage a WordPress installation while on the go is an exercise in futility.  WordPress for BlackBerry, however, makes managing your blog from your BlackBerry pretty straight forward and is down right invaluable when moderating comments.

Install WordPress for BlackBerry v1.3 from BlackBerry App World, or, download it OTA directly to your device by visiting http://blackberry.wordpress.org/download

Will Rogers’ Handset Protection Guarantee Program Blend?

A little while ago Rogers announced its Handset Guarantee Program. Today, the program has officially launched and Rogers got Tom Dickson of BlendTec’s “Will it Blend?” to introduce the new service.

We have all had a lost or stolen device at some point and this new program will allow users to get a speedy repair or replacement if the device is within the manufacturer’s warranty period. Alternatively if your device is out of the warranty period by time or broken, Rogers can assess the problem and provide a quote for repair. The aim of the program is to have a new device ready for pickup in 10 business days or less. You can also choose a replacement device in exchange for another 12 months on contract.

More information available from the Rogers RedBoard blog or Rogers.com/protection.

Is RIM CEO, Mike Lazaridis, Aware That Smartphones Other Than BlackBerry Devices Do Quite Well?

Netflix on iPad

I was reading an interview of Research in Motion CEO, Mike Lazaridis, and one of the things he said that I found very interesting was “ it is far from certain that video will become the “killer app” that defines smartphones”. I’ve go to ask the question..

Is Big Mike aware that smartphones other than BlackBerry devices actually do quite well?

It seems like the more interviews Mike Lazaridis does lately, the more it appears that he is completely oblivious to the world of smartphones outside of what RIM does.  The only platform that the  future of video is uncertain” on is the BlackBerry. Look at all the websites that are building, or, have already built, video players for the iPhone OS.

Mark my words…  Video is,  and,  will continue to be a big frigging deal on smartphones! Pooh-poohing this fact because your platform lags behind in this area makes you look arrogant, if not misinformed…

Steve Swasey, VP of Corporate Communications at Netflix, had this to say on the Netflix blog after announcing that there would be a Netflix client for the iPad…

For those of you asking whether Netflix will be on the iPhone and iPod Touch: We wouldn’t invite you to dinner without planning to serve dessert. In other words, we’re working on it so stay tuned.

Oh yes, Big Mike…  Video will be a killer app on smartphones.  There’s really no question about that.  The question to you, however, are you arrogant, or, misinformed?
