RIM Tried Buying Palm for Patents Alongside Apple, Nokia and Google

There is a rumor that RIM tried to purchase Palm alongside Apple, Nokia, Google and of course HP. HP eventually won the deal for $1.2 billion. According to the SF Gate, RIM basically had the deal in its hands and “had to work incredibly hard to blow it,” says their source. source recalls. RIM initially came in higher than HP, but HP upped its bid, our source says.

While Palm may have had some patents that would be beneficial to RIM, the idea of acquiring the company for the WebOS or integrating the WebOS on a BlackBerry seems highly unlikely. WebOS lacks the security that is fundamental to RIM’s business, although from a consumer perspective it may be cool.

In terms of improving on the OS, it’s better to look at the QNX acquisition. QNX is a company based in Ottawa (BlackBerryCool.com HQ) and there are several people close to the company who say the acquisition has little to do with automotive integration, and more to do with developing a next-generation OS. Remember, QNX’s core business is “middleware, development tools, realtime operating system software and services for superior embedded design.” Lets hope that they can help RIM develop an OS that puts many of the developer and consumer frustrations to rest.

BlackBerryCool Roundup for the Week of July 5th

This week brought some fun editorial content worth checking out. The post “Dear BlackBerryCool: Is this a Contest a Hoax?” brought quite a few laughs. We’re still receiving emails from users who entered this contest and are shocked to discover that the contest is fake and the email doesn’t work. An email today from BBCool reader Dezray says: “I send the email to people I know and everything and guess what I don’t get a phone!”. Shocking! On a more positive note, there is a cool BlackBerry contest going on right now. You can win an African safari, a diving trip to the Great Barrier Reef, or a Costa Rican rainforest trip by catching the “Live Bold. Be Bold.” tour in your city. Other cool news this week includes the launch of Service Pack 2 for BES as well as video of the BlackBerry 9800 Torch Slider, 9670 Clamshell Oxford and Curve 9300 Kepler.

AppCycle In-App Support System for BlackBerry Users Wants Beta Testers

AppCycle is an in-app support system for BlackBerry users. It has been used in both StudentDocket and Lister for quite some time now with considerable success and the developers are looking for Beta testers. If you register as a Beta tester, you will receive a free account for life in exchange for your help.

Developers are always in need of positive feedback and BlackBerryCool readers have always been there to provide it. AppCycle attempts to provide a system that allows developers to collect important data such as device and OS information, allowing developers to provide solutions more quickly and with less user hassle.

This is the sort of service that everyone benefits from. Register as a Beta tester for AppCycle today.

YouVersion Bible Reader 2.2 with New Features and Huge User Success

We haven’t mentioned YouVersion on BlackBerryCool in some time so I figured it was worth a post to share what has been going on with the app. YouVersion for BlackBerry is a Bible reader program that features a robust online database, reading plans, and sharing options. The app has had some great success with users including over 2 billion minutes of Scripture reading and over 650,000 mobile installations.

Managing the data for the over 40 different standards of English Bible translations and the 22 other languages is a vast undertaking. YouVersion has developed an ingenious system of keeping all the bible text on their servers and delivering your device only the content you want to read. This helps keep YouVersion a space-efficient app, weighing in at about 350k on my device.

There are lots of ways to read the Bible using YouVersion. After picking your translation (there are many English translations to choose from such as ASV), you can read it from cover to cover, search for specific passages, browse specific books, or use one of the multitudes of tailor-made reading plans. I found it very easy to find a good reading plan covering the parts I was interested in.

YouVersion has some good sharing options. You can share verses of interest through Twitter, Facebook, or by email. LifeChurch also have a contributor’s section at YouVersion.com that is growing all the time with new reading plans and other info.

YouVersion 2.2 now supports all BlackBerry devices. Download your free copy of YouVersion for BlackBerry.

Dear BlackBerryCool: Is this a Contest a Hoax?

Dear Sir/Madam,

I received this mail can you please confirm if this is correct or not?

Dear All,

Blackberry is giving away free phones as part of their promotional drive. All you need to do is send a copy of this email to 8 people; and you will receive your phone in less than 24 hrs. Please note that if you send to more than 20 people you will receive two phones.

Please do not forget to send a copy to: amanda.lee@blackberry.com

With Regards,

Amanda Lee (Marketing Manager)

Hi Rommel,

You’re a Legal Executive and you’re asking me if “BlackBerry” (not the company name) is giving away 2 free devices to everyone that sends 20 emails? You are hilarious.

BlackBerryCool.com

Listen Idiot, I am dealing with this for a client. If you took notice of the subject you would understand, but, then how could I expect that from a person who can only see as far as there eyelashes. All I needed was a yes or no. Get some education.

Regards,
Rommel

Rommel,

Actually, yes. It’s real. Sorry for being so curt.

BlackBerry is giving away 2 free devices worth around $1200 to everyone who sends 20 emails. There are no restrictions on this contest, so that means around 6.6 billion people are eligible. The contest won’t reach everyone, I’m sure only 2 billion or so will respond. BlackBerry will therefore be giving away 2.4 trillion dollars worth of BlackBerrys. Their market cap is only 28.56 billion, so I’m not sure how they’re going to afford this contest, but I’m so happy they’re doing it. All of my friends and I are entering. You should too.

-Kyle

Kyle,

Sure will do!

Regards

Rommel
