RIM Announce Official Twitter and LinkedIn Apps Almost Here

In the latest BlackBerry Connection Newsletter, RIM mentioned that the official Twitter app and LinkedIn app are “almost here”. The newsletter doesn’t mention any specific release dates, but if they’re talking about it now, I’m hoping within a month is a reasonable definition of “soon”. Also of significance, is the fact that RIM is calling their official Twitter app a “business app”.

At first this struck me as odd but after thinking about the features built into the official Twitter app, it seems very much geared towards PR agencies. For example, the search function allows you to search for brands and filter the search based on “attitudes”. This feature would be particularly useful for a company looking to monitor a brand and the consumer perception of this brand while on the go. Monitoring popular topics and trends is another feature of particular interest to PR agencies, as it’s important to see if a campaign is currently trending. Hopefully these apps arrive soon.

Saudi Arabia Regulators Request Access to BlackBerry Messenger

RIM have issued a statement recently to Arab News saying that they are investigating reports in the local press that Saudi regulators have asked for access to BlackBerry Messenger for security concerns. Reports last week said the Communication and Information Technology Commission (CITC) has asked RIM to allow the telecommunications regulator access to monitor messages sent by BlackBerry Messenger. It will be interesting to see how RIM responds to this as they move towards doing business in China. If a precedence is set, allowing government organizations access to BlackBerry email and services, companies and individuals alike will be concerned.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express Now Available

RIM have made BES Express officially available for download today. The free server software is a watered down version of BES that allows SMBs to wirelessly sync data on Exchange or a Windows Small Business Server. BES Express works with Microsoft Exchange 2010, 2007 or 2003, and Windows Small Business Server 2008 or 2003. For more information and the free software download, visit blackberry.com/besexpress. Gartner Release Breakdown of Mobile OS Market Share

mobile-os-market-share

Gartner have released their latest figures breaking down the mobile OS market between BlackBerry, iPhone, Symbian, Windows Mobile et al. RIM are doing very well in second place with a 3.3 point gain bringing them to 19.9 percent market share. While Symbian is dominating the list, I’m personally more concerned with smartphone-based OSes that have a relatively vibrant developer community. With all that today’s modern smartphone can do, Symbian seems like a relic of a feature phone world that is almost obsolete.

As we pointed out in the IDC post, you can’t deny Apple’s market share growth rate. Apple is selling just 10M fewer units than RIM, and if the growth numbers remain constant, I can see them overtaking RIM. On the other hand, RIM still has some core business and technology advantages that can leave Apple in the dust.

For example, carriers are going to put an increasing amount of pressure on hardware manufacturers to be efficient with data. Apple have been pretty greedy when it comes to network consumption and if they lose the carriers’ confidence, we’ll be seeing the carriers’ marketing dollars shifting to BlackBerry. RIM are also going to see a tremendous amount of growth globally, while Apple are too rigid in pricing to be effective outside of first world countries. It’s safe to say that the next few years are going to be very interesting.

Is This What A BlackBerry Super App Is Supposed To Look Like?

BlackBerry OS 6 Prototype

Some very interesting images emerged from yesterday’s BlackBerry Super App Webcast that we told you about a few days ago.  I am not quite sure what this application is, or, even if it is something that RIM is working on, but, it appears to be a some type of today page on steroids.

From one screen shot, we certainly can’t determine if this is a good BlackBerry application or not, however, it looks awfully nice.  I certainly hope that we, not only start to see really nice looking BlackBerry applications come out of RIM, but, the tools necessary for third party developers to create such applications without having to spend more time designing the GUI than it takes to code the functionality, come out as well.

Holding a webinar to show developers the possibilities of BlackBerry Super Apps is great.  RIM just needs to make sure that the tools necessary to create BlackBerry Super Apps are made available to them.
