BBC Confirms Native BlackBerry Apps Coming Later This Year

ways to consume bbc content

It seems like forever that users have been waiting for BBC content to be made available for their BlackBerry. Not too long ago, BBC announced an iPlayer app for BlackBerry that turned out to be a weblink to their online content, not a native app. Today, the BBC announced that they are continuing with the development of native smartphone apps that should be available “later in the year.” The first app to launch won’t be anything too spectacular and will probably just be their news app which is already available for the iPhone. It would be great to see the BBC launch a full BBC experience with TV programming, radio and written news content. Maybe that’s a pipe dream.

BlackBerryCool Roundup for the Week of July 12th

There was a lot of news this week about the upcoming BlackBerry tablet. So far, we know it’s a companion device like the Palm Foleo, and it will feature Flash support. It’s hard to have an opinion on it as it’s so speculative and we haven’t even seen a leaked picture of it yet.

Also in the news this week, today Steve Jobs claimed at his iPhone 4 Antenna Press Event, that the Bold 9700 is one of several other smartphones that has an antenna issue and is affected by a “Death Grip”. Personally, I’ve never had this issue and I have no idea what Jobs is talking about. One user even sent us a video of trying to Death Grip his Bold 9700 in every way possible and it simply doesn’t work. It would be great to hear RIM engineers sound off on this one because if Apple is making false claims about the device, they could be liable. Click through after the jump to catch up on a week of BlackBerry news, reviews and community discussion.

Blackberry Apps Question

HEY, i used to own a 9000, and i couldnt install apps on it. if i remember corectly it said something about not being able to install it in my country, that you had to be in the US or Canada. that was 2 years ago. is that limitation still on? cause i want a 9700, switching from the iphone, but if i cant install apps,,,, i’m not gonna switch.also, are there a lot of apps, like unit converters, games stuff like that?
also, one last question, is the browser livable? since im comin from a iphone 3g, the internet is pretty importnat to me, so let me know if its acceptable. i kno the 9000 was pretty horrible, but i hope the 9700 is much faster/better
thanks in advance

If Only BlackBerry Developer Tools Looked Like Google’s App Inventor

YouTube Link

Today, Google unveiled a new tool in Google Labs called App Inventor that allows just about anyone to create an app for Android. We’ve heard rumors that RIM will be launching new developer tools with a drag and drop style interface, and we can only hope that the tools are as easy and awesome as App Inventor.

App Inventor has been in closed beta and today they are opening it to the general public. For the past year, Google has been taking App Inventor around classrooms in the US, and they have found that it has also become a powerful tool for promoting computer science and programming. Once case involves a student with dyslexia who was inspired by App Inventor to take more computer science classes and is now learning Python.

The beauty of App Inventor is that you don’t need to know how to program to be an Android developer. This will open the market to thousands, and possibly millions of applications. The platform uses a visual system of blocks to specify the app’s behavior. The blocks editor uses the Open Blocks Java library for creating visual blocks programming languages.

The compiler that translates the visual blocks language for implementation on Android uses the Kawa Language Framework and Kawa’s dialect of the Scheme programming language, developed by Per Bothner and distributed as part of the Gnu Operating System by the Free Software Foundation.

With development tools being one of the largest barriers to entry for BlackBerry apps, something similar to App Inventor would really give App World a huge boom in applications.

If you happen to have both an Android device and a BlackBerry, you should definitely try it out. Just fill out this form to get an invite.

Head over to the App Inventor site to see what people are cooking up.
