RIM Tried Buying Palm for Patents Alongside Apple, Nokia and Google

There is a rumor that RIM tried to purchase Palm alongside Apple, Nokia, Google and of course HP. HP eventually won the deal for $1.2 billion. According to the SF Gate, RIM basically had the deal in its hands and “had to work incredibly hard to blow it,” says their source. source recalls. RIM initially came in higher than HP, but HP upped its bid, our source says.

While Palm may have had some patents that would be beneficial to RIM, the idea of acquiring the company for the WebOS or integrating the WebOS on a BlackBerry seems highly unlikely. WebOS lacks the security that is fundamental to RIM’s business, although from a consumer perspective it may be cool.

In terms of improving on the OS, it’s better to look at the QNX acquisition. QNX is a company based in Ottawa (BlackBerryCool.com HQ) and there are several people close to the company who say the acquisition has little to do with automotive integration, and more to do with developing a next-generation OS. Remember, QNX’s core business is “middleware, development tools, realtime operating system software and services for superior embedded design.” Lets hope that they can help RIM develop an OS that puts many of the developer and consumer frustrations to rest.

YouTube Link

The latest official video for the upcoming BlackBerry 6 shows off a lot of what we have already seen but adds a few details about the upcoming Social Feeds feature. Social Feeds, which we can only assume is the reason for Viigo’s acquisition, integrates all your news and social networks into one destination. There is a brief view of the new feature in the video, so you should definitely check it out.

In addition to the smooth new user interface, the new video illustrates a few of the new applications and features in BlackBerry 6 including:

  • Redesigned home screen
  • Universal search
  • Context-sensitive pop-up menus
  • Revamped BlackBerry Browser powered by WebKit

For more information, you can check out the post by Andrew Bocking, VP of Handheld Software Product Management on Inside BlackBerry. According to Bocking, BlackBerry 6 is on track for release this summer.

RIM End Of Lifes Windows Mobile Version Of Viigo

Viigo for Windows Mobile

Not that we didn’t see this coming after RIM’s acquisition of Viigo back in March, the BlackBerry maker has decided to end of life the Windows Mobile version of the application. As of right now, you can no longer download Viigo for Windows Mobile and support will be killed on July 21st.

BlackBerry OS 6 Screenshots Emerge with Huge Touchscreen Implications

BlackBerry OS 6 details and screenshots are here from BGR and it looks like we’re going to see a much different BlackBerry than the one we’re used to. The whole UI and experience sounds like it’s in-line with a new web 2.0-based smartphone world, and RIM have learned a lot from what their users want and their partners are providing.

The latest OS 6 details seem like they’re going to have huge implications for BlackBerry touschscreen devices. Considering the latest buzz that Lazaridis said there were uncertainties around the touchscreen market, I think this is going to very certainly make touchscreen BlackBerrys much more awesome. Some of the new gestures such as click and hold to bring up contextual menus, will make the whole Storm (assuming it will get OS 6) experience much more rich. OS 6 also features system-wide kinetic scrolling with rubberbanding, which makes it a much smoother experience.

For non touchscreen users, the experience will still be much improved. Tabbed browsing is going to rock, and many of the UI improvements to email will make the whole experience easier on the eyes. Being able to see a quick icon preview of an incoming message will make things a little more efficient. That being said, RIM’s first party apps will surely play a big role in OS 6, allowing them to integrate with all the new features.

One thing of particular interest was that apparently the new inbox style features RSS feeds, which might explain the Viigo acquisition. Although, they probably wouldn’t need the acquisition for this, but I’m sure we’ll see more creative implementation of RSS in OS 6.

It’s a little too bad we didn’t hear anything about widget support, as I think they’ll play a big part in the BlackBerry app market in the coming years. It would have been interesting to see how OS 6 performs with widgets and lets them complement the user experience.

In terms of release date, it looks like we might see this actually hit the market in the June/July timeframe. This is incredible and it might mean an announcement at WES next week.

Ford Fiesta 2011 to Launch with SYNC AppLink for BlackBerry

Ford will be launching their Fiesta 2011 line with a new in-car infotainment system called SYNC AppLink. The software will allow for hands-free voice control over BlackBerry and Android apps including Pandora, Stitcher and the Twitter app OpenBeak.

While tweeting from your car might seem dangerous, there is some potential to use Twitter in a way that would make driving safer. For example, we previously wrote about a group in Venezuela that use Twitter to warn others about potholes and traffic conditions. It would be interesting to see a driver using Twitter in their car for a similar purpose.

SYNC is coming to BlackBerry first, which is also something we’re not used to seeing. Perhaps the acquisition of QNX might have some interesting implications here.
