BlackBerry 9800 slider Approved by FCC

BlackBerry Slider 9800

We are only 1hr away from the RIM and AT&T event and everyone is expecting to see the BlackBerry Slider 9800 to be announced.  You have to suspect RIM may announce something around the BlackPad (AKA BlackBerry Tablet).  It would be amazing if AT&T managed to lock in the iPad, Kindle (new model $189 AT&T 3G ) and RIM’s tablet for the data plans.  The FCC documents reference model RCY71UW, but from the images this looks like the slider we all know and love (real name is the BB Torch).  HOW DID VERIZON not get this device?

Hardware specs are rather standard luetooth, 802.11b/g/n, GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1900, UMTS II (1900), V (850) are all go with the GSM/GPRS/EDGE 900/1800 MHz bands and UMTS I (2100) bands.  We will all know in the next hour or so.

Help: Google Apps without Data Plan

Hi – i had a iphone 3G data plan, but lost my iphone so i am now trying to use an old blackberry (8707g) under the same plan.

I would like to install the google apps but i can’t find any place where I can download the COD files.

I have also tried using User Agent change on Firefox to download the respective JAD files but it won’t install without the COD files.

Can someone help? I have googled the net for solutions but the workarounds have been written a while back and does not really apply.

Many thanks!

BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 Coming to Rogers Q3 2010

rogers blackberry curve 3g

This pic comes to us from our friend RogersDude69 who snapped it while on the job. The BlackBerry Curve 3G is one of the least interesting BlackBerrys in RIM’s current product line and even Rogers themselves describe the device as “a basic BlackBerry”. The device is aimed at students and it’s pretty clear that it will have a low price tag. If this device is free, I can definitely see a lot of people getting one. The pic shows that the BlackBerry Curve 3G will be coming to Rogers in Q3 2010 and features the following:

  • First 3G Curve
  • Exclusive color
  • Build-in WiFi and GPS
  • 2.0 MP camera

We’ll have more details for you in the coming weeks about this device so stay tuned.

Cincinnati Bell The First U.S. Carrier To Offer The BlackBerry Pearl 3G

@njvinnie, a regular commentator here on RIMarkable just asked me this morning via Twitter if I knew what the holdup was on U.S. based carriers offering the BlackBerry Pearl 3G.  It just so happens that Cincinnati Bell already does.

We are pretty sure that they started offering the Pearl 9100 just recently, so, if you really want to pick yourself up a new Pearl 3G, and, you fall under their coverage area, you might want to head over to the BlackBerry Pearl 9100 page on Cincinnati Bell’s site.

Opinion: Android Devices With Good Phyiscal Keyboards Pose A Bigger Threat To The BlackBerry Than The iPhone Ever Has

Motorola Droid 2

I was having a conversation with a few friends recently all of whom know that I am really into smartphones, the BlackBerry in particular.  One of them had just gotten a new iPhone 4 and was trying to convince the rest of us, all BlackBerry users, that the iPhone 4 was going to crush the BlackBerry and put RIM out of business.  Being the smart Alec that I am I asked if he was using the term “crushed” loosely like when he said the iPhone would crush the BlackBerry, the iPhone 3G would crush the BlackBerry, and the iPhone 3Gs would crush the BlackBerry.

After my BlackBerry using friends and I stopped giving it to my iPhone buddy for being oblivious to reality when it comes to his iPhone fanboyism, one of them said that an Android device with a good keyboard would make them move off the BlackBerry a lot quicker than an iPhone ever would.  Everyone, myself included, agreed…

This post is not really meant to bash the iPhone 4.  The 4 is an incredibly cool iPod that you can often make phone calls from.  Android devices, however, are pretty darn cool themselves and the ones with “good” keyboards are of particular interest to BlackBerry users that simply won’t go to a device with a touch screen only, but, might be looking to make a move to another platform.

I know that the keyboard on the Motorola Droid kind of sucks, however, rumor has it that the keyboard on the Droid 2 is vastly improved.  HTC is starting to pump out Android devices with keyboards as well and we know from their work on some of their Windows mobile devices that they know how build slide-out as well as good QWERTY keyboards.

A June Nielsen survey of smartphone users showed that less than half of BlackBerry users, 47%, want their next phone to be a BlackBerry.  Although I doubt seriously that more than 1 out of 2 BlackBerry users will leave the platform when the time comes, many BlackBerry users have bought their last BlackBerry and I am willing to bet that the lions share of those that do switch will find Android devices with good keyboards more appealing than the iPhone.

That’s my opinion…  I’d love to hear yours.
